Keeping aside the telecom controversies in India, the 3g technology is finally getting launched in India by various service providers. Tata DoKoMo being the first private telecom service provider to start, other players are following the lead. 3G by itself is not a technology needed for every Indian at this point in time and the same is the case across the world. Not everyone is using the 3G features even if it is available to them. According to a recent study by Neilson company it will take around 8-10 years for majority of the Indian consumers to adapt to 3G.
“Only one in five urban mobile subscribers would opt for 3G services in the short term, a new study by the Nielsen Company has found. It further noted that it may take as long as 8-10 years before a majority of mobile users move onto a 3G plan. The study was released by the Nielsen Company in New Delhi on Wednesday at the `Consumer 360′ conference.”
BSNL has launched their 3G services well ahead of the private players, however the market response seems to be poor. Market leader Bharti Airtel is expected to launch its 3G services in December, and Vodafone Essar is gearing up to launch its offering in January 2011, to be followed by the Aditya Birla Group-owned Idea Cellular Ltd.
As we all know, the adoption of the mobile phones was slow in the past until the price has come down to affordable rates. Same will be the case with 3G technology with an added reason, which is the need for using the 3G features. Not everyone will require 3G features.
