Gone are the days when you prepare a resume and submit it to various recruitment companies and keep your fingers crossed to be short listed. These trends of job hunting are very difficult both for the candidate and the recruiter. It was a challenge for the recruiter to find the right candidate and for the candidate to find the right job. Now with social networking all around the place the job hunt is a lot easier. Let us see how we can use social media to assist our job search.
- The first step is to make yourself a brand.
- Tweet and be famous
- Link and get LinkedIn
- Social Networking Targeting Companies
- A word of caution
Your blog or your personal website is a way by which you can give a complete portrait of yourself, of who you are – your niche areas, competencies, strengths, expertise, interests and what not. This will almost do the same work of resume and even more. This may attract a potential employers/ recruiters who maybe looking for something what you have done and have mentioned in your blog. Now this does not mean that you should brag about everything that you do, you always need to keep in mind the company Non Disclosure Agreement that you have signed 🙂
Next you need to make your personal website / blog visible to the intended crowd, yes to your recruiters. Just give a job search in Twitter and you can find the number of opportunities that has been already listed. So you need to follow recruiters. But before that the you need to make a short bio of who you are professionally, location and a link to your website or blog to know more about you.
LinkedIn has become another place where recruitment is very active. So you need to get registered in LinkedIn and create your profile and you need to ensure that the profile is 100% complete. Also you need to make sure that all the keywords pertaining to your skills are mentioned as the recruiters use keywords to find the required candidates.
There could always be some companies that you are really interested in working for. It is always a good option to search for such companies in the social networking sites and get in touch with the employees working there who have similar technical interest as yours. The employees will know about the openings in these companies and can intimate you regarding the opening.
Keep in mind that even your current employers will be using the social media. So if you post “Tired and fed up with my work.. Looking for a change in career!!!”… Your employer can also understand what you are up to! So you need to post things wisely and judiciously.
Have you been recruited using social media? If so please let me know about it.
