The recent “Big Thing” we heard about Yahoo was about the decision of Yahoo CEO who stopped the “Work from Home” culture. Immediately after that I saw lots of blogs and news sites suggesting that this could be a blunder.
Few thoughts that had gone through my mind are:
- Marisa Mayer knows what she is doing
- Coming from Google, she knows the importance of keeping people happy
- She would have a list of top performing staff in Yahoo and the MIS related to revenues generated by each category of staff
- She might have based the revenue stream as well as the success of the projects within Yahoo before taking this decision
When you call those people who “work at home” to your office premises, you are adding cost to the operations. I am sure that it was pretty oblivious for Marisa Mayer. So when she takes such a decision, it is either the “[email protected]” staff are not as productive as expected by the Yahoo Management or they want to give a chance to the “[email protected]” staff so that they can improve efficiency and communication within the organization.
The other thought I had is that this is an indirect Pink Slip. Many of these “Work @ Home” staff are stuck with their work from home culture and might be away from the Yahoo offices. It might not take real sense for them to travel long ways or relocate to Yahoo offices. If this is the intention, I am sure that it will work out very well for Marisa Mayer and Yahoo.
Anyways, all the best for Marisa Mayer and those people who work for Yahoo from home.
