Location centered mobile social networking websites are becoming a real threat to your personal security. Recently a gag website called “Please Rob Me” has revealed that when you are telling people where you are, you are inturn telling the buglars that you are not at home and giving them an opportunity to rob your home. This is the message that we see :
username left home and checked in less than a minute ago: I’m at location
The location is the exact location where the person is. Interesting!!
As stated in Telegraph.co.uk “People who use social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook have been warned that they could eventually face rises in their home insurance premiums of as much as 10pc.” and hence the insurance companies might investigate if the customer broadcasts information over the internet. Same is the case with Google Buzz, most of the users might not have even been aware of security settings initially.
Even the photos or messages or information posted on Orkut, Facebook or any other social networking websites, if not set to private, it would be available to everyone who could potentially misuse it. For example, Orkut does have a option to prevent photo tagging but unfortunately facebook doesn’t. Facebook does notify the user when the user is being tagged.
In short whatever information we share or put in the social media you need to be really prudent and wise so that it is safe and doesn’t get into the hands of crooks.
