With the social networking sites being so popular, privacy is at stake if you don’t give proper attention. Here are a few things that could be done to make Facebook more secure.
Know who your friend is
Its always better to know who are there in your friends list. When you get friend requests, be careful not to approve any request, make sure it is from your friend and then approve it. You can group your friends into various lists like they have on orkut. Acquaintances, Friends, Family and Foe 😉 Once you group your friends its easier to decide which group has to view your posts, photos and the lot.
Photos – Everybody loves watching them
You can decide which group of friends should see your photos. You can decide that the photos of some family event need to be seen only by your family members, the photos of your friend’s party can be seen only by your friends group and so on… For this you need to access the Privacy setting. In the main Facebook page, there is a menu “Account”. Click on that and we can see “Privacy Settings”.
In the privacy Settings page, there is “Profile Information”, and when you select that menu, you can see an Edit Setting against “Photo Albums”. Once that is selected, we can select who would be seeing the albums.
There are options for Everyone, Friends, Friends of Friends and Custom. If we are choosing Custom, and click on “Edit Custom Settings”, a window pops up so that we can choose which group can view the album or even we can omit some people.
Personal Information – Yes its Personal
In the Privacy Setting there is Profile Information. You can choose who can see your Birth date, Neighborhood, Relationship status, and your Relatives Information (Mom, Dad, Sibling, Spouse and Kids) and we could even link to their profiles, if they are on Facebook. There could always be some crook who can manipulate things using this information. So it’s always better to be cautious on who is going to view the it!
It is always better to restrict the visibility of your contact information – email, contact numbers and Address. The visibility could be controlled in the “Edit My Profile” page, next to where you enter the information. There you could choose who can see each of your contact information, because against every item in the contacts page there is a privacy setting option.
Think of situation in which you are tagged in a pretty embarrassing photo. What do think is going to cost you? Your relationships, job and your personal life would be at stake. So in order to prevent this you have another option in the Privacy settings page “Photos and Videos of Me”. You can customize who it would be visible to and whom it should be hidden from.
You can restrict the visibility of your posts be it status updates, Links, Photos, Videos or Notes. You can also decide who can view the post by your friends. You can even allow or disallow your friends to post on your Wall. Hence you have options to avoid embarrassing posts 🙂
For finding our long lost friends, we search for them on Facebook or any other social networking sites or any other search engine. If we don’t want our Facebook profiles to be there in the search list, we have an option for that. (Privacy Settings > Search > Facebook Search Result) where you can choose who should see your profile in the Search Result. But once you choose your profile not be displayed in the search result, your friends can’t find you too.
Likewise you can also allow or disallow your Facebook profile to be accessed by Search engines. Also you have an option to block people whom you don’t want to interact with. Its also comes under the Privacy Setting. But this doesn’t mean you can block them in all ways. They still can contact you through other sites.
So by following these steps you can manage your privacy on Facebook. But if someone else posts photos or videos of you, you can’t hide it. So you need to be alert on who is posting and what they are posting.
